Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorshipmeanwhile the Democratic National Convention kicked off this week in Chicago and night one packed a punch with President Joe Biden who would have been the nominee delivering a political Farewell Address after a lengthy Standing Ovation from thousands of delegates on the convention floor he ran through a Litany of accomplishments from his administration when on the attack against the goop nominee Donald Trump and made the case for the Democratic party's new nominee Harris telling the public quote I gave my best to you then referred to selecting Harris as his running mate four years ago as quote the best decision he made his whole career Harris came out after the speech embracing Biden in a hug and an emotional moment former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton also took the stage delivering fiery remarks underscoring the potential for the first female president adding she wanted her grandchildren and their grandchildren to know she'd been there for Harris when the quote glass ceiling finally shatters day two also has major Headliners including President Barack Obama First Lady Michelle Obama and first gentleman Doug mhof one man who has a seat to it all is New Jersey Democratic State committee chairman Leroy Jones who joins me now from Chicago Leroy Jones uh thanks for taking a few minutes uh from what seems like a pretty energetic convention take us inside day one night one because this is all about Democratic Unity which a month ago seemed like a far-fetched idea well uh you know you're right Brianna and thanks for uh you know bringing me back uh you know to the folks of New Jersey uh last night was uh you know was electric it was entertaining uh you know it was uh you know a breath of hope uh you know for our country and um you know you you couldn't be in a at a place you couldn't have been in a better environment that uh you know just led to the enthusiasm uh you know as I said the hope uh you know and the encouragement for the future of our country you know President Biden made this remark that he loves his job but he loves his country more that to me and I think a lot of other folks read like uh his reference to the fact that he stepped aside to sort of pass the torch as everyone has been speaking did you get get that sense being in the room there that there is a torch now being passed to this next Generation that clearly that was the case Brian and uh you know that that is a keen Insight uh you know Joe Biden uh you know is an example of profiles and courage and uh you know he put him you know he put himself he put the country before he put himself and uh you know and last night was uh you know an indication of uh you know his service to uh you know our country 50 years plus of uh you know exemplary service um you know Joe Biden is a loved man and uh you know that love was expressed last night and embraced by so many his family uh you know his colleagues uh you know vice president Harris uh you know all that uh you know that know and love Joe Biden uh you know just expressed that last night it was Joe Biden's night last night yeah I mean we saw that when kamla Harris came out on stage but you have to admit it wasn't long ago that key Democratic leaders were also kind of pushing him with the sole of their shoe out the door to make this happen and so yes there was a lot of admiration and respect um but it wasn't without some real card playing there to make it happen yeah well look uh we're GNA put that in the rear view right uh you know we're about moving forward we're about moving this country forward uh you know this is uh you know a uh a galvanizing and a unified effort in the Democratic party's uh you know Lane and you know we're going to embrace that we're going to you know we're going to accept that and you know we're going to move to uh you know to uh together with all you know with a degree of and a spirit of energy that is second to none and that's what you saw last night how is that energy Leroy reflecting back on New Jersey delegates there because of course the state hasn't been without its own fractures we're coming off of the heels of uh Senator Manz menendez's resignation today uh there was the whole kurur fuffle over the county line just a couple of months ago is it just insiders who are feeling that energy or do you feel like the party as a whole for New Jersey is uh benefiting from some of these Ripple effects no this is uh you know the party holistically uh you know as uh you know I just mentioned in the question prior to we're gonna put that in the rear view uh you know that all that was then and this is now uh you know these are the moments of now Martin Luther King talked about that so eloquently uh you know in its speech before the country back in 196 three this is about the urgency of now the moment of now and we're going to move forward uh you know with that Spirit uh you know of uh of now and uh you know the enthusiasm that uh the Democratic party not just in New Jersey but throughout the lengthen and breath of the country that uh has accepted that mantle of uh of leadership and that Spirit of energy and uh you know that notion that there is a tomorrow uh for the United States of America and so what are you looking forward to as the week goes on it looks anyway like New Jersey is scheduled to have a moment in the spotlight tomorrow with Senator Booker talk to me about that oh yeah that I mean look you know New Jersey uh you know is not a swing state as you know uh you know but uh you know we have uh you know our moment uh you know of involvement here in a meaningful way tonight uh you know we'll be uh you know participating in the roll call uh tomorrow we'll uh you know we'll uh the convention will be led off by uh you know Senator Booker who's names as a co-chair uh you know and he will be you know he will be speaking at the opening Gabel and uh you know you'll hear uh you know from uh vice president soon to be vice president uh wals tomorrow along with a number of uh you know of of other star studed Democrats and celebrities uh and that will be you know the uh the continuation of uh you know the the weeklong events here in Chicago all right we we'll check back with you Leroy Jones for us thanks so much always a pleasure Brianna and uh you know I will be here so uh you know check back as soon as you can because uh you know certainly have a lot to talk about as this week goes on [Music]
